Periodontology curriculum (2024)

The course part “Billing for periodontal services” is also transmitted online. Your dental hygienist has the opportunity to participate in this part of the course free of charge.

Participation in individual modules on request.

Periodontal issues are becoming increasingly important in dentistry. In view of the high prevalence of periodontal disease in the German population and its possible systemic effects, there is a great need for treatment. The curriculum is designed to provide participants with an overview of the basics and the current state of the art in periodontology – both in theory and by means of practical exercises – and thus enable them to adequately diagnose and care for periodontally diseased patients in their practice. Billing information and case presentations round off the curriculum.

Peri-implantitis (Prof. Dommisch, PD Dr. Jepsen)
It is well known that both periodontitis and peri-implantitis are caused by bacterial infections, but fundamental differences exist in host-microbe interactions with oral mucosal tissues as well as the variety of local and systemic risk factors.
Peri-implantitis is a challenging condition where the treatment choice should be based on the severity of the disease and the configuration of the peri-implant defect. Resective approaches have been shown to be the treatment choice for horizontal and/or wide vertical bone defects. There are several protocols to improve the predictability of these resective approaches, such as performing implantoplasty, using systemic antibiotics or modifying the quality of peri-implant soft tissues. In addition, the role of supportive therapy plays a role in the long term.
Techniques and goals for preventing peri-implantitis by maintaining a keratinised mucosa around the implant are discussed. We will provide insights into regenerative and resective approaches to the treatment of peri-implant disease. This course will illustrate what to consider when managing implant complications, what surgical approaches are available and how to predictably promote infrabony regeneration of peri-implant defects. Specifically, our own surgical protocol for strategic therapy will be presented.

Contents:

  • Differences between the treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis
  • Surface decontamination (surgical/non-surgical)
  • Resective therapy of peri-implantitis and the challenges
  • Reconstructive/regenerative peri-implantitis therapy

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize that loss of keratinized gingiva may be one of the risk indicators.
  • Recognize that maintaining a firm soft tissue cuff around the implant facilitates plaque control by the patient.
  • Recognize the correct peri-implant defect for the repair of peri-implantitis defects
  • Recognize when resective approaches are indicated
  • Evaluate the step-by-step approach to soft and hard tissue management in regenerative or resective peri-implant surgery.

Practical exercises:

  • on the porcine jaw and implant model
